Thursday Night Cup Success for Frenford's Youth Sides

David Pike19 Jun - 10:33

Falcons U14s & Kestrels U19s produce memorable performances to continue their respective cup campaigns.

Frenford's talented young cricketers enjoyed another memorable evening at Frenford HQ on Thursday 18th June, as both the Falcons U14s and Kestrels U19s produced memorable performances to continue their respective cup campaigns.

With places in the knockout stages firmly on the line, both teams rose to the occasion, showcasing the depth of talent and exciting future developing throughout the club.

Falcons U14s Keep Qualification Hopes Alive

The Falcons welcomed Belhus CC for Matchday 3 of the Sir Alastair Cook Cup, knowing that victory was essential to keep their hopes of progressing from the group stages alive.

Frenford U14s produced another outstanding performance to chase down a challenging target of 170 and secure a memorable victory over Belhus.

Earlier in the evening, Frenford made the perfect start with the ball. The attack was led brilliantly by Imran Khan, whose pace, control and aggression helped reduce Belhus to 35/3 and put Frenford firmly on top. The bowlers worked hard as a unit and created constant pressure during the opening stages of the innings.

However, Belhus fought back superbly through a magnificent century from Dhillon Mahal. His outstanding 105 from just 53 balls completely changed the momentum of the game and threatened to take the match away from Frenford, helping Belhus recover to an imposing 169/4 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Frenford approached the chase with maturity and intent. The opening partnership between M. Faheem (38) and captain Ayaan Azam (59) was outstanding, putting on 115 runs and laying the perfect platform for the chase. Both batters played positively while showing excellent game awareness against a strong Belhus bowling attack.

With the light fading and the game still in the balance, Bhavraj Sohal and Hamdaan Khan showed tremendous composure. Facing some high-quality pace bowling, the pair remained calm under pressure, rotated the strike intelligently and guided Frenford home with an unbeaten partnership to seal victory with eight balls remaining.

It was a fantastic contest between two talented young sides, with Frenford showing resilience, maturity and character to come out on top. The victory keeps the Falcons firmly on course for qualification from the group stages, with everything still to play for.

Kestrels Progress to The Next Round 3

On the adjacent pitch, the Kestrels U19s hosted local rivals Wanstead CC in Round Two of the Regional Stages of the ECB National U19 T20 Cup, with a place in the Regional qualifier at stake.

Having lost the toss, Frenford were asked to field first, and the Kestrels responded with an outstanding bowling and fielding display that set the tone for the evening. Disciplined from the outset, they consistently built pressure on the Wanstead batting line-up, restricting scoring opportunities and forcing mistakes.

The standout performance came from Roshni Moitra, who produced an excellent spell of seam bowling to finish with 3 wickets for just 16 runs from her four overs. Her accuracy and control proved difficult for the visitors to handle and earned her deserved reward. She was superbly supported by Krisha Shah, whose wicket & economical spell ensured Wanstead were never able to build any meaningful momentum.

Thanks to the relentless efforts of the bowling attack and some sharp work in the field, Wanstead were restricted to 112, leaving the Kestrels requiring a composed chase to progress.

Captain Fatima once again led from the front with the bat, continuing her outstanding recent form. Playing positively against a disciplined Wanstead attack, she struck a fluent 38 from just 29 deliveries, rotating the strike intelligently while finding the boundary whenever opportunities presented themselves. Her innings ensured Frenford remained comfortably ahead of the required run rate throughout the chase.

Although the skipper departed before the finish, there was never any sense of panic. Georgie and Jasmine calmly guided the Kestrels home, batting with maturity and composure to see the side over the line with an over to spare, securing another impressive victory and booking their place in the next stage of the competition.

The performance was another excellent example of the progress this talented Kestrels squad continues to make. Their disciplined bowling, energetic fielding and controlled batting display highlighted the all-round strength within the side as they continue to build confidence with every outing.

The victory sends the Kestrels through to round three and 'Regional' opposition, where they will look to continue their impressive cup run and take another step towards national honours.

A Bright Future for Frenford
