Another busy weekend across Frenford Cricket Club saw victories, hard-fought contests and further evidence of the development taking place throughout the club. From league cricket to cup semi-finals, our captains reflect on the weekend's action.
1ST XI – Mo Amin (Captain)
The 1st XI travelled to Woodford Green and, after losing the toss, were put into the field.
We made an excellent start, reducing the opposition to 58-3 in the first 20 overs. The bowlers kept things tight and restricted the scoring well. However, a strong partnership shifted the momentum in their favour, and our fielding standards dropped. A number of chances went down, including catches and stumping opportunities, while too many extras were conceded. These mistakes proved costly as Woodford Green recovered to post 270-9 from their 50 overs.
In response, we lost an opener early and struggled to build significant partnerships. Too many batsmen were dismissed playing poor shots at important stages of the innings, making the chase increasingly difficult.
Fazal played an excellent innings, scoring a well-made fifty and holding the innings together. Batting at number eight, Aadil then produced a brilliant knock, showing great composure and intent. Unfortunately, he continued to lose partners at the other end and was ultimately left stranded as wickets fell around him.
2ND XI – Haroon Zakria (Captain)
It was a really pleasing win for the 2nd XI in difficult conditions, with the heat making it a tough day for both sides.
After winning the toss, we felt the wicket offered enough assistance early on and the bowlers responded brilliantly. We kept things tight from the start, built pressure through consistent lines and lengths, and took wickets at regular intervals. The effort in the field was excellent throughout and helped us restrict a strong opposition batting line-up to a chaseable total.
With the bat, we knew patience would be important. The top order gave us a solid platform and although there were a few moments where the game tightened up, we remained calm and backed ourselves to get the job done. Partnerships throughout the innings proved crucial and allowed us to keep moving towards the target without panic.
The most pleasing aspect of the win was the way everyone contributed. It wasn’t about one individual performance; it was a genuine team effort with contributions across batting, bowling and fielding. In warm conditions against good opposition, it showed great character from the group to stay focused and get over the line.
A strong win, important points on the board, and hopefully momentum we can carry into the coming weeks.
3RD XI – Waqqas Naqvi (Captain)
The 3s took on a top Westcliff side away. We bowled well on a flat deck, restricting the home side to 237 for 8 from their 45 overs. Five wickets from Atif led the way.
Our response took a shaky start when we were 8 for 3. A good partnership from Zulfi and Tehseen got us back in the game, but at 103 for 4 the game was still in the balance.
A 62 from the skipper, Waqqas, headed the fightback. With 35 needed from the final 7 overs and 8 wickets down, good finishing from Saif and Atif sealed an awesome chase and win with 2 overs to spare.
4TH XI – Robert Rollins (Captain)
Frenford 4th XI continued their excellent recent form with a convincing 7-wicket victory over Chelmsford 4th XI, making it three wins from our last four league matches and further highlighting the progress of this developing side.
After losing the toss and being asked to field, the team produced a disciplined bowling and fielding performance to restrict Chelmsford to 148 for 9 from 30.3 overs. Mohammed Qaisar was the standout performer with an excellent four-wicket haul, well supported by Isa Chaudhary’s two wickets and some tight spells from across the attack.
A special mention must go to Armaan, whose spell provided real energy and control, helping build pressure during key phases of the innings. His commitment, accuracy and willingness to bowl to the team plan played an important role in keeping Chelmsford’s scoring under control and creating opportunities for the bowlers around him.
Behind the stumps, Amir Ashraf produced another outstanding display of wicketkeeping. His sharp glovework included a sneaky stumping and an excellent catch, while his communication and encouragement helped keep standards high throughout the innings. As one of the senior players in the side, Amir’s experience and influence on the field cannot be overstated.
Amir then led the chase from the front with a superb 57, setting the platform for victory. Valuable contributions from Maf Faheem (27) and a blistering unbeaten 39 from just 13 balls by Shoaib Khwaja ensured Frenford reached the target in only 18.2 overs, finishing on 150 for 3.
The most pleasing aspect of this result is the continued development of our young players. Their enthusiasm, commitment and growing confidence are reflected in a record of three wins from the last four league fixtures. The future looks bright for this talented group, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the weeks ahead.
5TH XI – Razi Siddiqui (Captain)
Frenford 5th XI won the toss and elected to bat first on a very dry and uneven pitch. The conditions were challenging, with variable bounce making it difficult to bat.
Despite our best efforts, we were only able to bat for 27 overs and posted 117 runs on the board. Harsh was the standout performer with the bat, producing a valuable half-century.
By the time we took the field, the pitch had deteriorated further and was beginning to crumble, creating even more assistance for the bowlers. Despite our below-average fielding effort, our bowlers maintained disciplined line and length, making full use of the conditions without giving away easy runs.
Every bowler contributed, with Bhavyameet bowling exceptionally well and claiming 4 wickets. We managed to bowl Goresbrook CC out for just 71 runs in 21 overs.
Well done to everyone for contributing to an excellent team win.
KESTRELS 1ST XI – Fatima Imtiaz (Captain)
Frenford Kestrels produced a commanding display to defeat Coggeshall Town CC and secure their place in the EWPL 100 Plate Final, with explosive batting, disciplined bowling and sharp fielding combining to deliver a memorable semi-final victory.
We got off to the perfect start thanks to an electrifying opening partnership. Taking the attack straight to the Coggeshall bowlers, I was pleased to contribute 53 from just 28 balls, helping put us on the front foot from the outset.
The star of the innings, however, was Georgie Heath, who delivered a masterclass in controlled aggression. Remaining unbeaten throughout, Georgie compiled a sensational 97 not out from only 48 balls, falling agonisingly short of a deserved century. Her innings was packed with timing, placement and power and completely dominated the contest.
Supported by valuable contributions from Uswa Syed and Afsheen Ansari, we posted an imposing total of 190 from our 100 balls.
Coggeshall began their chase positively, but our bowlers quickly wrestled back control of the game.
The crucial breakthrough came from Krisha Shah, whose spell turned the momentum firmly in our favour. Krisha removed the opening batter and finished with outstanding figures of 2 wickets for just 10 runs from her 15 balls.
The rest of the bowling attack was equally impressive. Afsheen Ansari claimed 3 wickets for only 7 runs, while Sana Chaudhry produced a superb spell, taking 4 wickets for 20 runs as we continued to apply pressure throughout the innings.
The bowlers were backed by excellent fielding, with catches held under pressure by Uswa helping maintain our grip on the match.
Coggeshall were eventually dismissed for 81, with the Kestrels claiming all ten wickets and completing an outstanding all-round team performance.
We now look forward to EWPL 100 Plate Finals Day and the opportunity to finish the competition strongly.
