Another busy week of indoor cricket brought action across our junior and senior sections, starting with a Thursday friendly before a packed schedule of league fixtures. There were strong team performances, young players making their mark and individual moments worth remembering, including one extraordinary spell from our U9 Hawks.
THURSDAY 15 OCTOBER
U13 HAWKS — A POSITIVE START AGAINST BANCROFT LIONS
The week began with a friendly as our U13 Hawks took on Bancroft Lions. Winning the toss, Captain Laksh elected to bat and his team put together a good total to defend.
The bowlers then backed up the batting effort, defending the total well and giving the Hawks a positive outing ahead of their league assignment the following evening. A useful opportunity to build confidence, work on combinations and get more indoor cricket under their belts.
FRIDAY NIGHT LEAGUE ACTION
U13 HAWKS — FOUR RUN-OUTS, ONE CONVINCING WIN
Captain Laksh was back at the toss on Friday night, again choosing to bat first as the U13 Hawks faced Loughton CC.
Frenford set a strong target of 108, giving the bowlers something substantial to defend. What followed was an excellent team performance in the field. Tight bowling created pressure, and the fielders made sure that pressure counted, producing four run-outs as Loughton were dismissed for just 68.
This was a victory built on much more than the runs on the board. The Hawks combined disciplined bowling with sharp awareness and excellent support in the field, showing exactly what can happen when a team works together and takes its chances.
A strong all-round performance from Laksh and the boys.
U15 FALCONS — TOP-ORDER STRIKES SET UP THE CHASE
Our U15 Falcons were also in Friday night action against Wanstead. Losing the toss, Frenford were put into the field, with the bowlers tasked with keeping the opposition in check.
Imran Ali Khan struck twice up front, setting the tone for a disciplined effort supported by Isa, Ayaan and Mohammed Faheem. Wanstead were restricted to 84 all out in 10.4 overs, leaving the Falcons with a manageable target.
The chase did not begin quite as smoothly as hoped, with wickets falling and the innings needing a reset. Enter Ibrahim and Imran. The pair steadied the ship, found a way through the pressure and guided the Falcons home with overs to spare.
Imran continues to develop into a genuine all-rounder, contributing with both bat and ball when his team needs him. A well-earned Friday night victory for the Falcons.
SATURDAY MORNING ACTION
U9 HAWKS — SUFIYAN'S FOUR-WICKET BURST!
Saturday began with a standout performance from our U9 Hawks against Aztecs, as Sufiyan delivered a display with both bat and ball that will be remembered for some time.
Opening the batting, Sufiyan contributed 19 runs, helping establish the platform alongside support from throughout the team. But it was with the ball that the young Hawk really caught the eye.
Sufiyan took four wickets in four balls, finishing with extraordinary figures of 4 for 14 from two overs.
Four wickets in four deliveries is a remarkable achievement at any level. To produce it at U9 level, in the early weeks of the indoor season, makes it all the more special.
A fantastic individual effort, supported by the contributions of his teammates, and an exciting start to the campaign for this young Hawks group. Well played, Sufiyan!
U9 FALCONS — SHARING THE LOAD
Our U9 Falcons were also in action on Saturday, taking on Neo after losing the toss and being asked to field first.
The Falcons responded with tight bowling and wickets shared around the attack, gradually putting themselves in the driving seat. With the bat, contributions were mixed, but the boys showed patience when it mattered.
Tristan and Aman provided a steady finish, seeing the Falcons home and completing a positive morning's work.
It is always encouraging to see young players learn that games are not won through one contribution alone. A disciplined bowling effort, followed by a composed finish, gave the Falcons the result they were looking for.
SENIOR FALCONS — A CHASE THAT FELL JUST SHORT
The Senior Falcons took on Woodford Wells, winning the toss and electing to field in the hope of chasing down a manageable target.
With the opposition's total within reach, Abdullah led the response with the bat, supported by Umer and Mo' Rahim as Frenford looked to build momentum.
Unfortunately, as those key contributions ended, so did the Falcons' best opportunity to complete the chase. The remaining batting effort could not quite close the gap, and this time the Senior Falcons came out second best.
A frustrating result, particularly with the target looking achievable, but the group will take the lessons into its next fixture. Indoor cricket can turn quickly, and holding a chase together through the middle stages remains crucial.
SUNDAY — SENIOR KESTRELS 1ST XI
TWO MATCHES. SOME GOOD BATTING. ROOM TO IMPROVE WITH THE BALL.
Sunday brought a double-header for our Senior Kestrels 1st XI against Wanstead & Snaresbrook. Unfortunately, neither result went Frenford's way, with both matches following a similar pattern.
There were positive contributions with the bat from Georgie Heath, Aaminah, Julie Sklodowska and Fatima Imtiaz, giving the Kestrels totals to defend and moments of encouragement across the two games.
The challenge came in the second innings. Frenford struggled to find the penetration needed with the ball, allowing Wanstead to build partnerships and work their way towards both targets.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Kestrels, particularly given the promise shown by the batting. The key now is to bring the two disciplines together: turn competitive totals into pressure with the ball, break partnerships and make the opposition work harder for every run.
There is plenty of quality in this group, and the response in the next round will be important. The season is still young, and this double-header offers clear areas to work on as the Kestrels look to get back to winning ways.
THE WEEK IN PERSPECTIVE
There was plenty of positive news across the junior section this week. The U13 Hawks combined a strong total with excellent fielding against Loughton, the U15 Falcons showed resilience to complete their chase, and our U9 Falcons demonstrated the value of shared contributions and a calm finish.
And then there was Sufiyan. Four wickets in four balls is the sort of performance that makes you stop and take notice.
For the senior sides, there are lessons to take forward. The Senior Falcons were unable to finish their chase, while the Kestrels found runs but not quite the bowling threat required across their double-header. Both will be looking to turn those experiences into better results.
Indoor cricket continues to offer a different challenge every week. The margins are tight, the tempo is relentless and the value of teamwork is never more apparent.
Keep learning. Keep competing. Keep moving forward.
We Are Frenford.
