From a place in the Brian Taylor Trophy Final to the U14s marching into Finals Day and another impressive U19 victory, it has been another huge week for Frenford’s junior competition sides.

Across the age groups, our young Falcons continue to test themselves against some of the strongest junior cricket in Essex – and this week brought progress, performances and plenty to be proud of.

U19 Falcons – Another Win for Haroon’s Side

Our U19 Falcons continued their excellent start to the Ravi Bopara Cup with another impressive victory, this time against a strong Hornchurch CC side at Frenford HQ.

The foundations were laid with the bat through an important middle-order partnership between Abdullah Shahzad and Zain Akram. Their stand gave Frenford the platform needed to build a defendable total after the visitors had applied pressure.

With the ball, the Falcons produced a disciplined response. Hasnain Akram, Armaan Qaisar and Adam Chaudhary were particularly economical, keeping Hornchurch under pressure and ensuring the chase never developed the momentum required.

Another composed team performance from the U19s and another important win as their Ravi Bopara Cup campaign continues to build.

U16 Falcons - A Valiant Fight to the End

Our U16s saw their Trevor Bailey Matchplay campaign come to an end against last year’s finalists, Hornchurch CC, but not before pushing strong opposition deep into the second innings.

Winning the toss, Frenford elected to bat on a tricky surface, but the top order struggled to establish itself and build the partnerships needed for a truly competitive total.

Saif-Ali Zahoor, however, produced an accomplished and resilient innings, batting with maturity and good shot selection to finish unbeaten on 78 and give our spin-heavy attack something to defend.

The response could hardly have started better.

Young Isa Chaudhary, making his Matchplay debut, struck twice inside the opening two overs to immediately put Hornchurch under pressure.

From there, the hosts responded with mature, measured batting on a difficult surface. Frenford rotated their accomplished spin attack and continued to search for breakthroughs, with wickets falling throughout the chase, but could never quite find the sustained penetration needed to take complete control.

Hornchurch eventually reached the target with a few overs remaining, bringing our U16 Matchplay journey to an end.

A valiant effort from a talented group who competed hard throughout the competition. We go again next year.

U14 Falcons – Onto Finals Day

What a week for our U14 Falcons.

Two impressive victories either side of the weekend have propelled the team into the latter stages of the Sir Alastair Cook Cup.

First came a crucial group fixture against neighbours Ekota Academy. Frenford knew a convincing victory was required to strengthen their net run rate and secure top spot – and the Falcons delivered emphatically.

Hamdaan Khan led the charge with a superb 101 from just 60 balls, setting the tone with an outstanding century when his team needed it.

Then came the bowlers.

Our spin princes Ibraheem Abulkhari and Zayan Shaikh claimed four wickets apiece as Frenford dismantled the hosts for just 49, completing the emphatic victory required to top the group.

That earned the Falcons a knockout trip to the picturesque home of Audley Wenden CC, set in the heart of the Essex countryside.

Winning the toss, Frenford elected to bowl and produced a controlled performance. Although the attack did not find the volume of wickets it had in the previous game, disciplined bowling restricted the hosts to 123/5 from their 20 overs.

The response was emphatic.

Our openers combined patience with power, judging the chase superbly and reaching the target with 4.4 overs remaining without losing a wicket.

Another statement performance and another step forward.

The work isn’t finished. Now onto Finals Day.

U12 Falcons – Brian Taylor Trophy Final Bound

Our U12 Falcons travelled to Coggeshall CC for a huge Brian Taylor Trophy semi-final against last year’s finalists – one of the strongest junior sides in the county.

For a Frenford team featuring eight U11 players in the starting XI, this was another major test for an exceptionally young group.

Captain Lekh won the toss and elected to field, preferring to know exactly what his side would need to chase.

Coggeshall immediately showed their quality, racing to 46 from the opening 5 overs and putting Frenford firmly on the back foot.

But the Falcons responded superbly.

Tight spells from Bilal, Vihaan and Karan dragged the scoring rate back, with Coggeshall reaching 76 after 12 overs. Vivian and Laksh later supported economically as Frenford continued to apply pressure, eventually restricting the hosts to 160 from their 30 overs, an achievable target on a large ground with plenty of gaps and a lightning-fast outfield.

The chase, however, was never going to be straightforward.

Frenford’s openers were immediately put under pressure by Coggeshall’s older, taller attack, combining sharp back-of-a-length pace with leg-spin on an increasingly deteriorating surface.

Captain Lekh weathered the early pressure and, after Vikram departed, found good support from Zayyan. But the squeeze was beginning to tell and, with both soon back in the pavilion, Frenford needed someone to wrestle back the momentum.

Step forward Bilal and Vihaan.

Bilal’s measured, calm approach combined beautifully with Vihaan’s positive shot-making as the pair began to turn the contest back in Frenford’s favour. When Vihaan eventually departed, Karan took up the mantle alongside Bilal.

Our young spin princes were now earning their batting stripes.

Through the middle overs, Bilal and Karan steadily clawed Frenford back into the game, reducing the equation to a manageable run-a-ball with five overs remaining.

Karan was eventually brilliantly stumped by the Coggeshall keeper, but the partnership had done its job. The remaining batters now had belief, while Bilal continued to hold the innings together, calmly nurturing the tail through an increasingly tense finish.

Along the way, he reached a hugely deserved maiden fifty, an innings of composure and maturity when his team needed it most.

Then, with just three balls remaining, Aadvik found the boundary for the winning four.

Frenford had done it.

From conceding 46 in the opening five overs, to fighting back with the ball, absorbing the pressure of a difficult chase and holding their nerve when everything was on the line – this was a performance full of character from an incredibly young Falcons side.

Eight U11s. Away to last year’s finalists. A semi-final decided in the final over.

And now, a place in the Brian Taylor Trophy Final.

A Brian Taylor Trophy Final awaits our U12s. The U14s continue their Sir Alastair Cook Cup journey. The U19s keep building momentum in the Ravi Bopara Cup, while our U16s can look back on a campaign in which they competed against some of Essex’s strongest opposition.

Different ages, different stages of their development, but the same Frenford pathway.
